Vladimír Kopecký attended the Kamenický Šenov and Nový Bor glass schools before transferring to the Prague School of Applied Arts, where he studied under Josef Kaplický from 1949 to 1956. He soon began to favour the "ugly" treatment of glass. He set up as a freelance artist in 1961, but it wasn't until he became head of the Prague Glass Department that he began to favour the "ugly" treatment of glass.
He treats painting in a way that would classify him as a painter, but his ability to master other forms of expression underlines his versatility in both thought and technique. Between his sense of spatiality and his use of various media, he pioneered the worldwide movement of individual expression in glass, and his unique art form has made him a leading figure in modern art in the former Czechoslovakia, as well as in the contemporary Czech Republic. Working with abstraction, Kopecký was as fascinated by exact geometry as he was by expressive and gestural techniques. Alternating between various media, styles and scales, Kopecký's pioneering work has been regularly represented throughout Europe, North America and Asia in public exhibitions, institutional collections and commissioned architectural works. His work was, for example, exhibited at the 1958 Brussels World Fair, an event that was a milestone for glass art worldwide, at the Corning Museum of Glass, or at the Yokohama Museum of Art.
