Ambrosius Bosschaert is a Flemish painter born in Antwerp in 1573 who died in The Hague in 1621. His father was a painter and he was registered in the guild of Saint Luke of Middelburg from 1593. He was a member of the guild of Utrecht from 1616 to 1618. Afterwards, he ended his career in Breda, in the south of the Netherlands.
Ambrosius Bosschaert represented bouquets of flowers in niches and was soon considered a specialist in 17th century floral compositions. His compositions are characterized by symmetry around an axis and a search for detail. However, his later works such as Bouquets de fleurs, Mauritshuis, La Hague are freed from this primitive symmetry: the compositions are freer there.
