Claude Venard was born in Paris in 1013 and determined very early to become a painter. Little interested in an academic training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the painter in the making forges his artistic education by restoring paintings with a master restorer at the Louvre. From 1936, he participated in several group exhibitions devoted to modern art for an artistic movement derived from the avant-garde "Forces Nouvelles". After the war, his art became well known and his numerous exhibitions, especially internationally (London, New York, Milan, Geneva, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Düsseldorf, Munich, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, etc.) allowed him to live fully from his art. In the early 1960s, he set up his studio in Sanary, in the south of France, where he continued to explore his distinct angular style, gradually accentuating his chromatic palette and his technique of using a coarsely applied knife in a thick layer that would determine his own post-cubist style.
His works are in the permanent collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, the Met in New York and the Tokyo Museum. He died in Savary, France in 1999.
