A scientific study by the laboratory for the study of works of art of Louvain la Neuve is provided, which allows to see the repaints and the original parts, and which concludes: "The analysis by microfluorescence of the shepherd and his flock in a wooded landscape indicates the use of pigment compatible with a palette of the XVIIth century"
Restoration of use and maintenance, re-coated.

Art historians agree that it was after 1645 that the artist developed his sense of landscape; he turned to compositions with large anchor trees in the foreground on one side and distant views on the other, which catch the eye with vast clouds, playing on the use of colour for these. The painter is particularly fond of monumental works in format and design with an atmospheric effect. This is the case of the large canvas presented here, with a clump of trees in the centre, a path into the forest on the right, and a gap with a river towards the horizon on the left.
