Shepard Fairey discovered the world of graphic design at the early age of 14, when he drew images for t-shirts and skateboards that were inspired by the work of artists such as Andy Warhol and the Russian artist Alexander Rodchenko.
In the late 1980s, Obey and a group of friends from the Rhode Island School of Design created a series of stickers and posters featuring the figure of wrestler Andre the Giant and plastered thousands of them on walls in American cities. Andre the Giant Has a Posse is one of the first and most important "viral" street art campaigns, demonstrating the capacity and strength of this new illegal medium.
His work became world famous during the 2008 US presidential campaign, with the creation of the HOPE poster of Barack Obama which became an icon of the campaign. The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston considered Obey to be one of the best and most influential street artists of our time.
