Patrick Hughes made his first three-dimensional relief painting in 1964 - his intention to do the opposite of what was done. Fifty-four years later, he is still doing it.
Patrick Hughes has painted reliefs that constantly confound his audience, demonstrating how deceptive appearances can be. As we walk towards the seemingly flat paintings, they rise up on us, creating a disorienting "moving" experience.
Preconceived assumptions of the eye and the brain are challenged, inevitably raising important questions about our visual perception. Patrick Hughes' witty illusions are not intended to confuse us (although they do) but to clarify our relationship to reality. Instead of describing the paradox, we can now experience it interactively; for his work has more to do with us, the way we think and the way we perceive.
Patrick Hughes' work has been exhibited worldwide in several solo and group exhibitions and is also part of many public collections.
