Joachim van der Vlugt, a Dutch painter living in Luxembourg, creates a resolutely contemporary painting, while being inspired by the classical Dutch masters. He revisits and mixes the two traditional registers of landscape and portrait.
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht, Joachim van der Vlugt, after having tried his hand at fashion design, turned entirely and definitively to painting. In love with the great masters of Flemish painting, he fully assumes their influence. Using a deliberately reduced and dark color palette, black and white, brown, beige and blue, Joachim van der Vlugt never ceases to superimpose layers of paint, which allows him to work with light, its nuances and its intensity, and to let images and vaporous figures emerge delicately. Without stopping there, he continues to compose his paintings by multiplying the layers, by accentuating certain areas but also by integrating geometric forms or almost transparent drips that perfect the composition of his paintings until he obtains, as he likes to call it, an orchestrated chaos.
This painting with multiple references, has a spiritual dimension. The artist likes to introduce hidden and almost invisible images in the under layers of his paintings. It is therefore a work that is discovered as it goes along, in front of which the viewer renews his gaze constantly.
Joachim van der Vlugt has been exhibiting his work for the past twenty years, mainly in Europe, through galleries in Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as at various contemporary art fairs.
