Born in South Korea in 1940, during the Japanese occupation, Kim En Joong knew the war of the two Koreas, communism, privations. His father, a calligrapher, raised his eight children in the Taoist tradition.
In 1956, his decisive meeting with a calligraphy teacher directed him towards graphic arts. He entered the Seoul School of Fine Arts and at the same time took French classes given by the foreign mission. Very soon, he made the deliberate choice to study Western painting, and became interested in impressionism, cubism and abstract art. Then Kim realized his dream and went to Switzerland to study art history, theology and metaphysics. His meeting with the Dominicans confirmed his vocation and on August 4, 1970, Kim En Joong put on the white habit of the Friars Preachers for the first time. He was assigned to the convent of the Annunciation in Paris, which became, and still is, his place of community life and artist.
