Born in 1912 in Venice, Gino Sarfatti studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Genoa. In 1939, he founded Arteluce, a lighting design company, which quickly became an internationally renowned brand, but also a meeting place for all the greatest Italian designers of the time.
During his career, Sarfatti designed more than 400 lamps, and devoted himself to technique, materials, research and experimentation. In the mid-1950s, he began working with Plexiglas. In the early 1970s, he innovated by integrating halogen bulbs into his lamps. The Sarfatti suspension lamp (1958) is one of his most notable projects.
Sarfatti and Arteluce received several awards, including the Compasso d'Oro in 1954 and 1955. In 1973, Flos acquired Arteluce, before Sarfatti's death in 1985, in Gravedona.
