Bruno Vekemans was a Belgian painter born in Antwerp in 1937 and died in 2019. Working from the image, the artist created a new reality that took shape through talented work as a colorist. Vibrant and intense, the colors he used play between transparency, fluidity and opacity in tones often tinged with browns, blues and blacks. By simplifying the image to the extreme through the use of chiaroscuro, Vekemans' works, whether portraits or cityscapes, have often been compared to the works of Spilliaert and the atmosphere of solitude and mystery they exude to that of the paintings of Edward Hopper. He has exhibited in Antwerp, Sydney, Paris, New York, Strasbourg, Saint Louis, Tokyo and other cities.
