Born in Bitterfeld in 1949, Hanns Schimansky took part in drawing circles during his school years, receiving important encouragement from Johannes Müller and later Gerhard Kettner. Berlin became his place of residence and work after his master's scholarship at the GDR Academy of Art. In 1997, Hanns Schimansky became a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts and, a year later, a professor at Berlin's Weissensee Art School.
