Abraham Gerardus van Velde (1895 - 1981), also known as Bram van Velde, was a Dutch painter and lithographer. In 1939, the artist created his own visual language, which met with little commercial success in the early years of his artistic career. From 1961 onwards, the pace of his exhibitions quickened, and he was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in 1964, followed by the Order of Orange-Nassau in the Netherlands in 1969. In 1975, the Belles-Lettres academic societies of Lausanne, Geneva and Neuchâtel awarded him the Belles-Lettres prize in Rolle, and in 1980 he was named Knight of the Order of the Icelandic Falcon.
